What is Systems Hierarchy?
The Systems Hierarchy is a framework developed by Kenneth Boulding that organizes all known systems into a series of nine levels of increasing complexity. These levels range from static frameworks (like a map) up to transcendental systems (dealing with the unknown).
Boulding introduced this concept to help thinkers from different scientific fields find common ground and language. By identifying the different levels, he allowed scientists to compare the complexity of their subjects (e.g., a simple machine versus a self-conscious human) and understand how lower-level systems are nested within higher-level ones.
